Day 882 About the Netflix movie Stowaway

Netflix just released a netflixed backed movie starring Ana Kendric (from Pitch Perfect) which is called Stowaway. I wanted to discuss this movie and its meaning. So SPOILER ALERT, if you want to watch the movie without spoilers then do so, and then you can read up on my views here if you would like.

So, the basics of the movie for those who don't care and just want it spoiled, is 3 people are going to mars, with 2 being researchers and one the commander. There is an accidental stowaway, which is a word that means someone who is on the ship unplanned for. In the movie it wasn't entirely certain if he was accidentally on the ship at least until a point. And the main thing is that the oxygen system is damaged and they only have enough for 3 people, not 4. That is the basic stuff. Now Anna Kendrick sacrifices her life to save the 3. And that is the part that is so cool about the movie. And that is the message of it. Because typically in this kind of movie and plot, what is racing in the mind is about survival and how the man who is a stowaway may try to fight to survive and may be a danger. Which sounds so silly out loud. But if you think of a typical hollywood movie, that is what you would see: Fighting, Survival, Me first! Yet this movie places this Juxtaposition of this selfish survival, and selfless sacrifice. And its more than that because the character of Ana Kendric, called Zoe in the movie, has that light, and that laughter and that likeable personality. And represents that commonsense of really caring for others. And in this kind of movie, you have to think of the Jesus archetype, as like the idea of sacrificing yourself for others, for the greater good.

I also remember something Bernard Poolman said, about making sure that you "Die Well", which for me means living a life of choices, decisions, impacts, where you Life was well lived in service of what is best for all. And what's awesome about the movie, and the script and the way it was delivered by the actors, is that you can see that having that Heart is what really moves people. Its an element of something real, and its powerful. It is an otherwise slow movie, and its not your typical hollywood movie. What is real in this life?
