What are connotations? So it turns out we have divided our languages into the positive and negative. Relax-lazy confident-arrogant brave-foolhardy (brash) determined-hard headed (stubborn) So you will notice above that all the words on the left have positive connotations and the words on the right have negative. Both words however mean the same thing, the only difference being that the person views the act as either positive or negative. So this is what is meant by connotation. It is useful to also know the word denotation, which means what a words actually means its: definition. So what does the fact that we have created and use words that have built in their definition a meaning of positivity or negativity?
