Miami: a taste of inequality 222

I am a native Miamian, I grew up here, graduated from public school here etc... Growing up I have heard Miami is like a Third World country in the United States. But you also have the super wealthy! So what's going on in Miami?

So you have the poor black neighborhoods, with African American populations, and also the poor Hispanic populations as well. You also have the wealthy neighborhoods, and also the SUPER wealthy neighborhoods like on Miami Beach.
Below are pictures of some of the wealthy neighboorhoods of Miami. I had a much easier time finding photos of the wealthy places of miami online, and practically impossible to find any pictures of the poor areas of Miami.
So I notice something interesting today. Today is the 1st day of 2015, the day after New Years eve. Most people were home, and so I was driving, noticing there were very few cars on the road. And in much of the houses I past, everyone seemed to be home, which you can tell by their cars being parked in. However when I was passing near some of the poorer neighborhoods, the streets were more packed with cars, racing by. I notice then how probably the more wealthy houses, had people who had more wealthy jobs so that they didn't have to worry about making money this day and could take a break. The poorer houses, and so families, still needed to find work and find ways to make money today.
I am familiar with both poor and wealthy mentalities. One is quick, faster, eager, scared almost, and in fear, and hestitation, and also a belief that one is stupid, and a hope that your kids will do better, so all of your focus is solely in your kids. The rich mentality, is more calm, put together, but also rigid, too self-assure, and also a distaste or disgust for the poor. Its funny because the rich are more prepared mentally, yet they are not fully developed, just developed enough. I also notice in some of the older wealthy people, a sense of giving up, like its too late or there is nothing to do. And the poor older people are broken, destroyed physically, and perhaps mentally/emotionally, and they only HOPE their kids/grandkids will do better. Often they continue to work into old age. The rich older people have more money then they know what to do with, and they all live in the same neighborhoods together. The poor live together. What separates them is just one street.
You also have the middle class, and the Super wealthy. The Super wealthy include Star Island, where celebrities live. Also the Miami Beach real estate is expensive too. On Miami beach you have lots of tan, beautiful, fit people everyday. There are other neighborhoods too, like industrial, art districts, and farm lands. But within that they also divide into the Rich and poor. You can tell by how dirty and run down the buildings are, or how well kept they are.
Is it funny how much money predicts a person's life? Hmmm.

Thanks for sharing this Yogan - I only knew of Miami from the movies that I've seen and in those movies the super-wealthy life style looks very glamorous - but when realizing that it is actually a reality that people live in, with such a division between rich and poor in practically the same space - it really puts things in perspective and the 'glamour' point kind of falls away to expose what is actually just a deliberate unawareness within human beings about other human beings equally existing in this world as the value of life is reduced to money.
ReplyDeleteYeah your spot on. What is strange is that I grew up here, so it was my entire world. It seemed the way it is. So not even a question about it within me. I was more focused on people's personality, and failed to see the money in their lives, and how that corresponds with their personality. Being poor has a stigma.
DeleteWhats really funny too, is how some of the poor/middle class, or workers in more wealthy districts dress up as if they were wealthy, to look wealthy and beautiful. That's another dimension.
